Donatella Versace took over the job of chief designer of the Versace brand after the death of her brother, Gianni, in 1997. She will now answer your questions.
The year is 1997. The fashion world is reeling. Gianni Versace, the flamboyant, provocative, and undeniably brilliant designer, is gone. His murder casts a long shadow, not just over the Versace empire, but over the entire industry. Now, his sister, Donatella, a woman who had long worked behind the scenes, finds herself thrust into the unforgiving spotlight, tasked with not only grieving her brother but also carrying on his legacy. This imagined interview, drawing upon the known facts and public persona of Donatella Versace, attempts to capture the atmosphere and the weight of expectation she faced in those tumultuous months.
(Interviewer): Donatella, thank you for agreeing to this interview. It’s a difficult time for you and the Versace family. How are you coping?
(Donatella): (Her voice, even in this imagined scenario, is husky, tinged with both grief and a steely determination.) It’s… it’s unbearable, naturally. Gianni was more than just my brother; he was my mentor, my confidante, my best friend. Losing him has left a hole in my life that can never be filled. But… he wouldn’t want me to crumble. He’d want me to fight, to keep his vision alive. And that’s what I intend to do.
(Interviewer): Many are questioning whether Versace can survive without Gianni’s creative genius. What’s your response to that?
(Donatella): Gianni’s genius was undeniable. He was a visionary, a master of his craft. But Versace is more than just one person. It’s a family, a team, a legacy built on years of hard work, passion, and incredible talent. We’ll honor his memory by continuing to create, to innovate, to push boundaries. It won't be the same, of course. It can't be. But it will be Versace.
(Interviewer): Let's look back. You’ve been involved with Versace for many years, working closely with Gianni. Can you tell us about your early days with the company and your collaboration with your brother?
(Donatella): (A faint smile touches her lips as she remembers.) I've been involved since almost the beginning, really. From a young age, I was surrounded by fabrics, sketches, and the energy of creation. Gianni and I were incredibly close. We had a unique synergy. He was the visionary, the flamboyant showman, and I… I was the one who understood the business, the details, the market. We complemented each other perfectly. We were a team. Always.
(Interviewer): Looking at your early photos – some of which have surfaced recently – you were strikingly beautiful even as a teenager. Was fashion always a part of your life?
